  • Structural Repairs

The method of restoration is generally dictated by the age and condition of the piece. Each piece is carefully examined to determine the proper course of action to insure that restoration done is appropriate and will not detract from an objects aesthetic and monetary value. No restoration is performed until, in consultation with the client, a final estimate is agreed upon.

When repairing veneered surfaces, whether inlay or marquetry, every attempt is made to save as much of the original material as possible. Where replacements to the surface are necessary, great care is taken to match the species and grain pattern of the original wood veneer. Consolidation of loose and lifting veneers is achieved through the use of hide glue, a material traditionally used in the construction of veneered surfaces. GLR will also make repairs to veneered surfaces incorporating non-wood materials such as ivory, bone, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, brass and other metals.

  • Gilding

Repairs to gilded surfaces, including frames and furniture, are done using 22 karat gold or silver leaf in accordance with traditional water and oil gilding methods, as appropriate. Again, every attempt is made to preserve the original surface before other alternatives are considered.
